Crucial point for Wednesday
Wednesday posted what could prove a crucial draw with a fair share of the spoils at Blackpool on Tuesday night.
A game of few talking points gave each side a positive result as the curtain starts to fall on a captivating Championship campaign.
Dave Jones’ side travelled over the Pennines with daylight between themselves and the bottom three and were out to cement second tier safety.
The Tangerines, meanwhile, had a two-point advantage over their visitors, knowing they were all but sure of survival with a maximum haul.
So it was little surprise that the game was one of relatively few chances and the ones that did arrive passed without conversion.
The Owls started on the front foot and Jermaine Johnson twice went close in the opening few minutes.
First, the Jamaican international volleyed a low drive into the arms of the grateful Matthew Gilks, then Johnson robbed Stephen Crainey close to the danger zone and forced the Blackpool keeper into a diving save.
Wednesday sustained the early pressure and Gilks came to the rescue once more when Giles Coke unleashed a fierce drive from the edge of the area.
Blackpool struggled to launch a significant attack, with twin Thomas Ince snapshots that bobbled wide their only real sight of goal midway through the first half.
But on 27 minutes, the home side carved by far their best opening when Nathan Delfouneso sent Ince darting through the middle but Chris Kirkland got the slightest of touches to deflect wide.
After the break, though, Blackpool had the bit between their teeth and immediately went close when Gary MacKenzie thumped a header against the crossbar from an Ince corner.
But there was little in terms of follow-up from the hosts and the second half developed into a scrappy affair on a heavy Bloomfield Road surface.
Neither goalkeeper was seriously troubled throughout - save a Gilks stop from Maguire at the last - and ultimately for both sides, the result was one that had to be seen as further progress away from the relegation trapdoor.
