Owls denied
The Owls posted their sixth draw of the season at Hillsborough on Saturday.
After a close-fought Sky Bet Championship fixture, Wednesday and Ipswich could not be separated on the day, sharing the spoils with a 1-1 draw.
Paul Anderson fired the away side into the lead 11 minutes in but the Owls were soon back on level terms, with Michail Antonio nodding home from close range to score his second goal of the season.
Both sides came close to adding to their tally with Cole Skuse and Jermaine Johnson rattling the woodwork of the Leppings Lane goal, but neither side could find a winner.
Wednesday were out in search of their first win of the campaign, while Ipswich were aiming to make amends for letting slip a 4-1 lead to Derby in midweek, to draw 4-4.
The Championship clash started at a quick tempo, with Owls’ striking duo Atdhe Nuhiu and Matty Fryatt looking lively from the off.
Nuhiu saw an early chance well closed down by Ipswich bodies in the area but as the Owls were applying the pressure, the Tractor Boys drew first blood on the counter.
From a hopeful clearance on 11 minutes, ex-Owl loanee David McGoldrick sprung the offside trap to race clear before squaring for the unmarked Anderson, who buried a low drive into the net.
In what was proving to be a highly entertaining contest, Wednesday were undeterred by the set back and levelled up the game just two minutes after the restart.
A deep cross from Reda Johnson picked out Nuhiu, who nodded back into the middle for Antonio to plant a firm header past Dean Gerken.
The goal was just the tonic for the Owls, who were visibly lifted after the quickfire leveller.
But Ipswich looked dangerous in possession and were unfortunate not to regain their one-goal advantage at the half-hour point.
Skuse managed to find a pocket of space in Owls territory and unleashed a fierce drive from 25 yards that struck the inside of the post and flashed across goal to safety.
On the stroke of half time, an outstanding instinctive save from Gerken prevented Fryatt from scoring his second goal in as many games, as the referee blew for the interval at one apiece.
Wednesday were quick out of the blocks in the second period, as Antonio crossed for Reda Johnson but the all-action defender powered his header just wide.
With the game so evenly poised, there was a sense that the next goal could prove crucial.
Chris Kirkland saved well from an angled Daryl Murphy strike on the hour and was called into action five minutes later, pushing Anderson’s low hit from the right away from danger.
McGoldrick then blasted a half volley over the bar before Jermaine Johnson came within the width of the crossbar from giving the Owls a lead.
Having pushed into a more advanced position with the departure of Fryatt, the Jamaican picked up possession from 30 yards and saw his thumping drive come crashing back off the angle.
Four minutes of added time were indicated by the fourth official but neither side could find that breakthrough as Wednesday’s search for their first win of the season continues.
