The Owls posted a much-needed and valuable victory against league leaders Leicester at Hillsborough on Tuesday.
And the goal action came early under the lights in S6, first through Anthony Knockaert for the visitors before a quickfire Connor Wickham double ultimately sealed the points.
It was all change for Wednesday under the guidance of first team coach Stuart Gray, who made four changes from the side that went down at Blackpool last Saturday.
Kieran Lee, Liam Palmer, new recruit Glenn Loovens and Atdhe Nuhiu all came into the team – but it was the worst possible start for the Owls.
Inside two minutes, Knockaert picked up possession on the inside right of the penalty area and jinked his way into a shooting opportunity before pulling the trigger on an unstoppable drive that flew past Damian Martinez.
But six minutes later, Wednesday were on level terms. Maghoma floated a looping cross to the far post that Wickham brought down expertly on his chest to smash across the despairing Kasper Schmeichel and in.
It was just the boost the home side needed and Wickham promptly forced a fine save from Schmeichel when the striker advanced on goal on the 15-minute mark.
Then, on 24 minutes, Wickham doubled his and Wednesday’s tally. The Sunderland man showed terrific instinct to first trap a loose, bouncing ball before flashing a crisp side-footer in off the far post.
The Owls continued on the front foot but with half time approaching, Leicester spurned a golden opportunity to equalise and Sheffielder Jamie Vardy was the culprit.
The Foxes forward was in oceans of room collecting a deep free kick but miscontrolled at the last to allow Martinez the chance to gather.
The young Owls’ custodian – enjoying a loan spell from Premiership giants Arsenal – came to the rescue just after the restart when Vardy raced through but Martinez was off his line sharply to deal with the danger.
Then on the hour, Martinez showed his burgeoning pedigree with a stunning save from a fierce David Nugent hit.
That gave the Owls the impetus to hang on to their lead and this they did despite Leicester enjoying more of the ball in the closing stages.
But Wednesday still looked a threat and Wickham was only denied a hat-trick by a flying Schmeichel save 13 minutes from time.
