On another day it could have been all three but Wednesday had to settle for a point against Bolton.

The Owls asked the majority of the questions, created the best chances and largely controlled possession but could not find that elusive breakthrough.

Stevie May saw an impressive first half strike ruled out for a foul in the build-up but the Owls could not capitalise in the second period and turn chances into goals.

After a confident start by Wednesday, the first real talking point came midway through the first half when May saw his goal ruled out for an earlier infringement.

Atdhe Nuhiu flicked on for the Scot, who dispatched a stinging drive beyond Andy Lonergan but the strike was ruled out as Nuhiu was adjudged to have fouled his marker.

The visitors then went close again when Chris Maguire had Lonergan beaten all ends up with a crisp finish but Matt Mills was back to make a crucial goal-line clearance.

Wednesday were dominant and promptly resumed on the front foot after the break.

Maguire sent in a dangerous corner and found Joe Mattock, whose downward header bounced up agonisingly over the crossbar.

Bolton responded with their first real threat at goal as Jay Spearing thumped a powerful effort on target but straight at Keiren Westwood.

Still, though, the Owls looked more likely to edge in front and almost did so on the hour when Nuhiu was denied from close range by Lonergan.

May tried his luck from distance after cutting in from the left but the shot slammed just wide at Lonergan’s near post.

Bolton were hanging on in the late stages as Nuhiu was blocked out in the area before Giles Coke’s curling effort drifted inches wide in the same spell.

And in a frustrating end to the game, Tom Lees saw his header cleared off the line by Spearing and substitute Royston Drenthe curled wide right at the last.
