Ten-man Sheffield Wednesday went down to automatic promotion contenders Bournemouth on a frustrating night at Hillsborough.
Royston Drenthe was sent off for receiving two yellow cards with the game deadlocked, but the visitors, who had recorded six consecutive wins going into the game, took full advantage of the extra man thanks to goals from Andrew Surman and Ryan Fraser.
Wednesday certainly enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, with the first real chances coming on nine minutes, when Drenthe tested Artur Boruc twice in quick succession, first with a low drive from the edge of the area, and then with a deflected effort from 25 yards.
Jacques Maghoma then stung the palms of Boruc 10 minutes later with a thunderous strike after cutting in from the left.
The visitors took a while to settle but soon started creating chances of their own.
Keiren Westwood was called into action on the half-hour, denying the in-form Callum Wilson who had made space for himself well in the box.
Wilson then went close again, firing over after good work by Surman before Westwood made another smart save to deny Matt Richie from distance.
The first chance of the second half fell to Liam Palmer, who blazed over after the visitors failed to clear Drenthe’s corner.
Moments later Wilson was provided with the clearest opening yet after being released by Brett Pitman, but the former Coventry striker pulled his shot wide when he might have done better.
Just before the hour, the hosts were reduced to 10 when Drenthe was dismissed for a second booking after a foul on Marc Pugh.
Bournemouth took instant advantage when Surman curled home expertly after a mazy run by Wilson to give the visitors the lead.
It was doubled moments later, Wilson again the provider, this time for substitute Fraser who confidently slotted the ball past Westwood.
Bournemouth seemed content with their lead and saw the game out in a professional manner, leaving Wednesday in hunt of that elusive home win.
