The Owls posted an impressive home win on Saturday against a Middlesbrough side chasing automatic promotion.
Two goals in as many second half minutes from Atdhe Nuhiu and Will Keane did the damage and put a dent in Boro’s elevation ambitions.
The victory was a welcome S6 triumph and saw Wednesday complete a double over the Teessiders following the 3-2 win at The Riverside Stadium back in August.
It was a controlled and emphatic second half performance too after an opening period that promised little of what was to come after the break.
The Owls survived an early penalty scare when Albert Adomah went down under a challenge from Claude Dielna but the visitors’ appeals were waved away.
Wednesday then threatened with a deflected Jacques Maghoma effort well saved by Dimitrios Konstantopoulos before Keane headed narrowly over the crossbar.
The only real highlights remaining were an Adam Forshaw chip that fell just the wrong side of the post and a Dielna volley which warmed the gloves of Konstantopoulos.
The game needed a lift going into the second half and Patrick Bamford almost provided it with a low cross that flashed across the Owls’ six-yard box but to no avail.
Wednesday went one better, though, on 52 minutes when they made the breakthrough from the penalty spot.
Kenneth Omeruo was adjudged to have handled in the area and Nuhiu stepped up to place beyond Konstantopoulos.
And two minutes later, Wednesday doubled their lead. Nuhiu’s glancing header came back off the far post and Keane was on hand to nod into the roof of the net from close range.
That quick-fire brace knocked the stuffing out of Middlesbrough, who rarely caused a resolute home defence any problems.
Indeed, it was Wednesday who asked more of the questions in the closing stages, although Boro went close to halving the deficit but for some superb defending on the line from Liam Palmer to deny Kike.
