Report: Bristol City 2-2 Owls
Bristol City twice came from behind to deny Wednesday three points at Ashton Gate on Tuesday night.
Fernando Forestieri gave the visitors an early lead before a Lee Tomlin penalty levelled the score going into the break.
Ross Wallace put the Owls back in the driving seat but a deflected effort from Tammy Abraham saw City post a point in their battle against the drop.
An enterprising start from City was promptly undone by the Owls, who took the lead from their first chance of the game on 17 minutes.
Barry Bannan sent Adam Reach in on goal down the right side of the penalty area and the former Middlesbrough man crossed to Forestieri, who slotted home from close range.
It was the boost Wednesday needed and they went on to dominate proceedings, with City on the back foot.
But on 31 minutes and against the run of play, the Robins were level from the spot.
Tom Lees was adjudged to have tripped Tomlin in the box and the midfielder picked himself up to smash into the roof of the net from 12 yards.
Having hauled themselves back into the contest, the hosts ended the first half as they began and the Owls welcomed the whistle at half time to regroup.
But it was the Robins that threatened four minutes after the resumption when leading scorer Abraham took a neat ball from Tomlin into his stride but hit wide of the target.
And City would be made to pay for that miss as Wednesday broke upfield on 51 minutes, with Bannan advancing to feed Wallace and the latter slotted past Fabien Giefer to restore the lead.
The home side were undeterred, though, and almost levelled two minutes later. Jens Hegeler evaded one challenge to round Keiren Westwood and was favourite to score but debutant Morgan Fox was on hand to clear off the line.
Abraham struck past the post on the hour as the Robins sought a second equaliser and they got exactly that on 70 minutes.
A scramble from Tomlin’s corner saw a loose shot from distance cannon off Abraham and with Westwood wrong-footed, the ball bounced into the far corner.
The closing stages stayed relatively even, with Forestieri dragging wide the Owls’ best opening, as an entertaining affair ended all square in the West Country.
