A big night for Owls youngsters

5 January 2017

Owls coach Steven Haslam says the Under-18s are looking forward to another Hillsborough clash in the FA Youth Cup.

Having advanced to the fourth round in style with a 4-0 win over Luton last month, Wednesday face Gillingham on Friday (7.00pm).

Happy with the build-up and preparation work, Haslam wants to see more of the same in terms of quality from the Owls that earned them a place at this stage of the competition.

He said: “The boys and staff are confident and feeling positive ahead of the game.

“Yes it’s a big game because it’s our next game. The FA Youth Cup gets a lot of attention but from our point of view, we have prepared well and are happy with our work.

“For a lot of the lads, it was their first time playing at Hillsborough in the last round and with that comes a different kind of challenge but the quality we showed was outstanding.”

An impressive Jordan Lonchar hat-trick and a superbly worked Fraser Preston goal saw the Owls romp to victory in the third round and Haslam continued:

“First of all we want to see that team ethic, work rate, spirit and for the quality we have to come through.

“We want to see the quality we have in possession, build-up play and in the final third while keeping balanced so we are in a good position to defend.

“It’s good for us to replicate the first team environment as much as we can and that includes the fans at the stadium supporting the team.

“It would be great if supporters could come down on Friday and back the lads, which would spur them on for sure.”
