Owls edged out by Barnsley

14 October 2016

Wednesday's Development Squad slipped to their first home defeat of the season, losing 2-1 to local rivals Barnsley at Hillsborough.

Midfielder Panutche Camara opened the scoring for the visitors, while Owls skipper Jack Stobbs restored parity with a top drawer finish.

But Romal Palmer's second half goal proved to be the difference in the end after Devante Rodney missed a penalty for the hosts.

Both sides engaged in a duel for midfield supremacy early on, but Camara was on target on eight minutes, stroking home from a Dylan Mottley-Henry feed.

The Owls' young guns were not disheartened and Stobbs pulled them level with a stunning finish on 20 minutes.

James Murphy played a searching ball to the left and the Wednesday winger scored from a long range dipping effort after evading two Reds defenders with a clever drop of the shoulder.

The Owls dictated the tempo after the goal and Stobbs and Matt Penney drew two low saves from Barnsley keeper Tim Brown.

Brown then rescued his side again, this time saving Rodney’s penalty after Brown tripped the same player in the box.

This left the home side chasing the game in the second half as Barnsley upped the ante and the Reds grabbed a second through substitute Palmer, who thumped home from Mottley-Henry's floated pass on 50 minutes.

For Wednesday, striker George Hirst replaced Rodney four minutes later and twice went close to equalising before Connor O'Grady was denied right at the last by Brown's reflexes from a last-gasp chance.

Wednesday: Kean, Centeno, Thorniley, Murphy (Preston 22), Dielna (Hayford 71), O'Grady, Stobbs, Clare, Rodney (Hirst 54), Clarke, Penney
