Routine win for Wednesday

16 July 2016

The Owls continued their preparations for the new campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Chesterfield.

Wednesday played some neat football too, dominating from the first whistle to take a two-goal lead into the break.

Kieran Lee and Fernando Forestieri were on target in the opening 45 as the Owls asked almost all of the questions.

Carlos Carvalhal’s men started as they would go on, creating good chances inside the first five minutes.

Forestieri and Ross Wallace went close before Lee went one better and opened the scoring on nine minutes after a precision cross from Jack Hunt.

More pressure followed and Wednesday doubled their lead 28 minutes in, Forestieri converting from ten yards having linked up well with Lee.

The hosts did create chances themselves, albeit few, the best of which fell to Curtis Morrison but the striker scuffed his shot from close range.

The second half followed the path of the first until the Owls made ten changes on the hour, with a raft of youngsters introduced from the bench.

George Hirst caught the eye, selling an outrageous dummy to his marker before advancing on goal only to be thwarted at the last.

At the other end, Kristian Dennis hit narrowly wide, just failing to convert a Gboly Ariyibi feed from the right as Chesterfield finished in the ascendancy but were unable to break Wednesday down.

Wednesday: Wildsmith (Dawson 60), Hunt (Vermijl 46), Lees (J Lee 60), Hutchinson (O’Grady 60), Palmer (Helan 60), Matias (Melo 60), Wallace (McGugan 60), Bannan (Semedo 60), K Lee (Stobbs 60), Forestieri (Hirst 60), Joao (Nuhiu 60)
