Steel City derby honours shared

7 September 2016

The Owls Under-23s shared the points with Sheffield United in the Steel City derby at Bramall Lane on Tuesday evening.

Will Buckley netted for the Owls midway through the second period, while Ben Whiteman restored parity for the Blades with a thunderbolt strike on 78 minutes.

With the hosts threatening to go on and win the game, Cameron Dawson was key in preserving the point, making a number of fine saves to keep United at bay.

Along with Buckley, Owls duo Vincent Sasso and Glenn Loovens stored 90 minutes for Wednesday, adding steel to Neil Thompson’s line-up in S2.

The first half saw plenty of enterprise from both sides, though, their fluid styles of play yielded only a handful of clear-cut chances.

The Blades threat largely came from set pieces, from which Harry Chapman and Jake Wright came close but could not get past the inspired Dawson.

Striker Devante Rodney was in the thick of things for the Owls and almost broke the deadlock before the break but United keeper George Long saved.

Wednesday were given a scare shortly after the restart as David Brooks pounced on a loose back pass from Glenn Loovens but the Wednesday skipper recovered well to shepherd the ball into Dawson’s gloves.

Buckley then rose to the occasion for the Owls on 67 minutes, opening the scoring with a fine finish on the back of a darting run down the right.

Long saved his first shot but could not keep out the header from the rebound.

United sought an immediate response and Brooks forced Dawson into making another fine save from close range, but Whiteman did level for the hosts on 76 minutes, firing into the top corner from the edge of the box.

More heroics between the sticks from Dawson kept the score levels, while Jack Stobbs saw his daisy-cutter gathered well by Long late in the game.

Wednesday: Dawson, Percival (Centeno 79), Penney, Murphy, Sasso, Loovens, Stobbs (Hayford 82), Clare, Rodney (Preston 63), Clarke, Buckley.
