Success for the Owls Under-23s

26 September 2016

The Owls Under-23s picked up their fourth win in seven league outings with a well-deserved 2-1 victory over Colchester United at Middlewood Road on Monday.

Matt Penney struck midway through the first half for Wednesday before Colchester levelled the game through Decarrey Sheriff nine minutes from time.

The visitors, though, were level for little over a minute before substitute George Hirst regained the Owls’ advantage.

The Wednesday youngsters began their pressing game early in the contest and dominated possession, albeit without testing opposition goalkeeper Dillon Barnes.

That was before Penney made the Owls' enterprise count on 27 minutes with a moment of magic.

The left back was teed up by skipper Jack Stobbs from a corner, which he expertly curled home from the edge of the area.

Neil Thompson's men kept a firm grip on the game after the break and threatened to double their lead when substitute Fraser Preston showed blistering pace down the left but was denied by Barnes between the sticks.

The U's briefly turned the tide and Owls custodian Dan Wallis had to be equal to Tariq Issa's shot from distance.

Colchester then levelled proceedings on 81 minutes when Sheriff steered home from a Charley Edge corner but substitute Hirst had the Owls back ahead almost instantly.

The striker continued his good run of form by notching the winning goal from a Lewis McGugan free kick.

The Owls youngsters next face Bristol City away on 10 October.

Owls: Wallis, Centeno, Penney, Murphy (Hayford 80), O'Grady, Thorniley, Stobbs, McGugan, Rodney (Hirst 64), Clare (Preston 57'), Clarke.
