Under-23s defeated at Ashton Gate

10 October 2016

The Owls Under-23s tasted their first defeat in six on Monday evening against Bristol City.

The Wednesday Development Squad were defeated 2-0 at Ashton Gate with goals from Shawn McCoulsky and Connor Lemonheigh-Evans either side of the break earning the hosts the points.

Wednesday began on the front foot and enjoyed plenty of the ball without carving anything clear cut.

Devante Rodney intercepted a misplaced pass and fired over from just outside the area midway through the first half before the Robins edged in front on the half hour.

Dan Wallis did superbly well to save McCoulsky’s point-blank header and tip behind but the striker nodded home from the resulting corner to give City the advantage.

That lead was doubled moments after the interval when Diego De Girolamo found Lemonheigh-Evans with a raking pass, which the Welshman controlled before drilling a low shot past Wallis.

Wednesday responded late in the contest as Jack Stobbs thrashed wide of the far post and Fraser Preston rattled the crossbar, as the Owls suffered only their second loss of the campaign.

The Under-23s are back in action against Barnsley on Friday at Hillsborough (12 noon).

Owls: Wallis, Penney, Thornily, O'Grady, Centeno (Percival 71), Hayford (Murphy 81), Clare, Clarke, Green (Preston 60), Stobbs, Rodney
