Under-23s share the spoils with Forest

2 November 2016

Wednesday’s Under-23s picked up their second draw on the road, held 0-0 by Nottingham Forest. The controversial clash at Alfreton Town’s stadium saw both captains sent off midway through the second period.

Hosts Forest were on the back foot early on, with the Owls moving the ball around impressively. But the roles were reversed as the first half progressed and Reds striker Ben Brereton pulled one shot just wide of the far post.

Soon after, wideman Anthony Wright drew a smart save from Owls keeper Dan Wallis.

Wednesday’s best chance of the opening 45 came on the half-hour but Forest custodian Tim Erlandsson was equal to Connor O’Grady’s glancing header from a Jack Stobbs free kick.

Neil Thompson’s men began the second half more purposefully and Matt Penney threatened from 25 yards on 66 minutes but missed the top corner by a whisker.

Tempers flared as the game hung in the balance, and on 72 minutes, Wednesday skipper Stobbs and his counterpart Toby Edser saw straight reds following an off-the-ball scuffle in the middle of the park.

The remainder of the game yielded scant goalmouth action and it stayed goalless to the final whistle.

Wednesday: Wallis, Clarke, Thorniley, Kirby, Dielna (Preston 64), O’Grady, Stobbs, Murphy, Rodney (Hirst 53), Clare, Penney
