Under-23s take derby honours

13 December 2016

Goals from substitute Jordan Lonchar and Connor Kirby propelled Wednesday's Development Squad to a 2-0 win over Leeds at Middlewood Road.

It was a welcome return to winning ways for Neil Thompson's side and three points thoroughly deserved after the Whites showed early promise.

Leeds began played a waiting game to find kinks in the Owls' armour and although Tom Pearce, Callum Nicell and Tyler Denton created three clear-cut chances in the opening exchanges, Wednesday custodian Jake Kean matched them each time with superb saves.

The hosts coped with the early pressure and replied through two efforts of their own from Matt Penney but the contest was goalless at half time.

The Owls grew into the game after the restart and skipper Sean Clare and Penney both found firm shots thwarted by opposition keeper Ross Turnbull.

With around 20 minutes remaining, though, substitute Lonchar handed Wednesday the advantage by heading home from a deep corner.

As Leeds pushed forward in seeking an equaliser the danger was conceding a second and this they duly did on 86 minutes as Kirby expertly tucked home from Clare's feed to seal three derby points.

Wednesday: Kean, Centeno (Lonchar 46), Penney, Murphy, O'Grady, Thorniley, Clarke, Kirby, Betra, Clare, Preston.
