Owls seal Johnson deal

16 September 2013

The Owls have secured the services of Roger Johnson on a three-month loan deal.

The vastly experienced Wolves defender has agreed a contract that will see the 30-year-old stay at Hillsborough until January 2014.

Johnson began his career with Wycombe Wanderers where he spent six years after rising through the ranks at Adams Park.

Owls boss Dave Jones, then of Cardiff, brought the Ashford-born stopper to the Welsh capital in 2006.

In his three years with the Bluebirds, Johnson was twice crowned as Cardiff’s Player of the Year and attracted the attention of numerous top flight clubs, eventually sealing a move to Premier League side Birmingham in 2009 for a fee of £5m.

During Johnson’s two years at St Andrews, the defender was a part of the League Cup-winning squad of 2011 after Birmingham overcame Arsenal 2-1 at Wembley in the final.

Johnson moved to then Premier League side Wolves in July 2011, where it was announced he would be club captain ahead of their forthcoming top tier campaign.

In total, the towering stopper has racked up 478 appearances in his career to date.

Jones said: “We are pleased that Roger is here because he is a fantastic talent.

“I know the lad well, he did fantastic for me at Cardiff, he is a very good player and we have been given the opportunity to bring him here and we are grateful for that.

“He knows what my principles are and what I expect from my players and he’ll know he’ll have to fight for his place.

“We have got a very, very good player, he has the stage here to perform and it’s up to him to go out and there take this opportunity.”
