A place in history

Sisters Jane and Helen Crawshaw recently celebrated the achievements of their great, great grandfather, Wednesday and England legend Tommy Crawshaw, in style at the National Football Museum in Manchester.

This year is the 110th anniversary of the Owls winning the League Championship twice in successive seasons under Tommy’s captaincy and 120 years since he joined Wednesday.

Wearing replica Wednesday kit from around the 1900s and Tommy’s FA Cup winners medals, Jane, 26, an actress based in London and Helen, 23, an MA student at Roehampton, were pictured with the old FA Cup and the original Football League Championship trophy, both of which figured large in Tommy’s career with the Owls over a period of 14 seasons from 1894 to 1908.

Centre half Tommy was in the Wednesday side that beat Wolves 2-1 in the FA Cup final of 1896 and captained the Owls to beat Everton by the same score in the 1907 FA Cup final.  He is the only Wednesday player to have won two FA Cup winners medals with the club.

Tommy, born and raised in Sheffield, was the last captain at Olive Grove and the first at Hillsborough.

Jane and Helen are true Wednesdayites and very proud descendants of the man that Owls supporters affectionately called ‘Our Tommy’ and hailed as the best Wednesday and England centre half of his day.
